A joint civilian-military airport, Savannah Hilton Head International Airport is the base for the Georgia Air National Guard’s 165th Airlift Wing, and also serves as the world headquarters for Gulfstream Aerospace. Second only to Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport as Georgia’s busiest commercial airport, Savannah Hilton Head International Airport is the chief commercial airport for the three-county Savannah metropolitan area and Hilton Head, South Carolina.
To address the growing need for expansion at the Savannah Hilton-Head International Airport, the Airport Commission decided to procure construction services under the Program Management delivery method. The team of URS Corporation and The Polote Corporation was contracted to provide these services. Under this contract, The Polote team provided onsite management staff (Project Manager, Superintendent and Administrative) services to oversee the construction of a new four-story, 1,690 space, 800,000 square foot high-end  parking structure with brick exterior showcasing Savannah’s classic southern style, roof with skylights, escalators and an atrium. The stunning brick exterior consisted of roughly 1,100 precast concrete panels that were assembled in three separate plants and put in place with cranes.

Terminal Expansion

The goal of this 62,000 square foot project was to add 5 additional terminal departure gates to the 10 existing gates for a total of 15 gates. The expansion was intended to increase the flow of traffic and the volume of customers served by the airlines and to accommodate the larger regional jets that are beginning to fly into Savannah. The new terminal project included 10,000 square feet of retail, concession, food service and restaurant space, plus maintenance lounge, pilot’s lounge and bathroom facilities. Designed to incorporate classic southern architecture, the terminal expansion was intended to reflect the same aesthetic charm and appeal as the airport’s main Savannah Square.

Maintenance Facility

Built to be hurricane resistant and serve as a command center in the event of a hurricane, the new maintenance complex provided the airport the ability to house more equipment and increase new office space and training rooms in response to its continuing growth. Consolidated into one base of operations, this 48,000 square foot facility houses all ground transportation, logistics and general maintenance functions. The new maintenance facility was built with planned expansion and is the center of airport’s long-term viability.
